A little more than 10 years ago, BMW put the “sport” in “sport-utility vehicle” with the ground-breaking, delightfully nimble X5. That same vehicle also took the “utility” out of “sport-utility vehicle”—literally—being assigned the BMW-invented “sport activity vehicle” moniker instead. Bmw x5 2011The rechristening was a clever trick that attempted to manage expectations not met by its small cargo area, which held less than that of the 5-series wagon of the day. For 2007, the X5 grew considerably to address the latter issue, although its sterling six- and eight-cylinder engines and sparkling new chassis ensured that plenty of sportiness, and the “SAV” moniker, remained.  Matched to an 8-speed Sport Automatic with Adaptive Transmission Control (ATC), the BMW xDrive50i accelerates from 0-60 mph in a mere 5.3 seconds. This puts it on par with some real sports cars. Top speed is electronically limited at 150 mph. Fuel consumption estimates indicate 14/20 mpg city/highway, with fuel tank capacity at 22.5 gallons. Bmw x5 2011he first-generation X5, one decade ago, redefined the premium sport utility segment. In a move counter to the rest of the industry, BMW called its first luxury SUV a “Sport Activity Vehicle” (SAV). It was a direct reference to its engineering design of premium handling, performance, efficiency, practicality and versatility over more traditional SUVs with their heavy off-road capabilities. The early X5 carried up to 5 passengers in sophisticated luxury. It offered full-time all-wheel drive (AWD) for control during inclement weather and car-like handling. Completely redesigned in 2007, the second-generation BMW X5 was slightly larger and addressed the limited cabin space of the previous model as it offered optional seating for up to 7 passengers. The engine choices remained either 6- or 8-cylinder powerplants.Bmw x5 2011

Bmw x5's a study in subtle refinement.Bmw x5 2011 No flashy doodads, no major upgrades--just a reworked drivetrain lineup to yield smoother driving and better fuel efficiency without sacrificing power or performance, with a few minor visual tweaks thrown in for good measure. As is typical for a BMW, the X5’s mid-cycle styling update is so subtle as to require a side-by-side comparison for most people to tell the difference. So you don’t have to open any more browser windows, here are the 2011 changes in a nutshell: The hood and grille are carry-over, but the plastic front fenders now meet a full-width and painted front bumper skin containing larger apertures and a scuff-plate-look metallic lower trim piece.Ride quality is superb on the X5 xDrive50i as it features front double wishbone and a lightweight multi-link integral rear suspension. Bmw x5 2011Engine-speed-sensitive power steering is light when traveling at low speeds, making parking lots and driveway maneuvers easy. The BMW X5 lineup is overhauled again for the 2011 model year, with a new turbocharged 6-cylinder engine, new 8-speed automatic transmission, and a facelift inspired by the bodywork on the sporty enthusiast-tuned X5 M. Inside the cabin, the leather upholstery is now offered in Oyster or Cinnamon Brown colors.Bmw x5 2011

Besides chucking two extra gear ratios at the existing transmission, BMW upgraded the unit to engage the torque converter to 100 percent lockup at lower RPMs, and to remain fully locked at higher speeds, even when getting into the throttle. That results in a more responsive, manual-like feeling of connection between the throttle pedal and the gearbox. In back, the bumper cap has been reshaped to match the look of the one up front, complete with the faux scuff plate. Chrome-trimmed taillamps also now adopt the bitchin’ LED “light banks” now found on the rumps of most BMW models. Toss in new exhaust tips, and the transformation is basically complete. Bmw x5 2011As speed builds, steering becomes progressively more robust providing the excellent feel we have come to know as a signature of BMW.Brakes are 4-wheel disc with ABS, Brake Fade Compensation, Dynamic Brake Control, Brake Drying and Brake Stand-by features. Wheel sizes are comparable at all four corners, 18-inch star spoke light alloy wrapped with 255/55 run-flat all-season tires.a feeling even more noticeable if you press the little Sport button in the center console. We did, of course, and never saw the need to un-press it. Bmw x5 2011
